That's the crux of the story in Emily Habeck's Shark Heart. While strange and unusual in premise, the book is actually tender and emotional. It's a wonderful example of magical realism - a genre rising in popularity over the last few years. These books use magical elements in their fiction, but write about them in a way as if the events/occurrences are real and normal. So in Shark Heart, some people are born with a genetic mutation that makes them more apt to turn into an animal over time.

Once you settle into the story, Shark Heart is very character driven and it's a tale about love, family, and impossible choices. I enjoyed the audiobook very much and was fascinated start to finish.
