From the Bookshelf of La Crescent Public Library…

The Bone Clocks was our library book club's June read. We sought to venture outside our normal genres and this book definitely did that!

Our group described The Bone Clocks as "Men in Black meets Harry Potter" with "a little Jack the Ripper thrown in." Another member tried to sum up the plot with "lotta weird crap in this one."

Well, the book is a trickier book club read as it's long and very transcendental. The structure is a complex one with many storylines and many of them without resolution. That said, the members that stuck with the story to the end, did like the book once they were done! But none of them have a desire to read more of this particular author. The book felt a bit too much like homework to follow rather than a pleasurable or escapist read.

All members appreciated reading outside their comfort zones and our discussion was lively on the themes in the book and about the character development. Everyone loved Holly and several readers wished the book had been just about her with less segues. They all championed one another to reach the end as they all appreciated the book as a whole more once they had read it all the way through and found some answers. They are willing to try more in the genre, which we'll take as a win!
