I thoroughly enjoyed Beth Macy's Truevine and learned a lot from it, though I agree with comments about it having a confusing timeline, being a bit too dense, or repetitious in some places. I think I was willing to give it more benefit of the doubt than most because I read early on that the author spent 25 years working on this book! She spent decades earning the trust of the Muse family in order to be able to tell this story, and the research was difficult when you're tracking a traveling circu ...more

Our May book club selection was Truevine. Reader opinions were mixed in terms of style of the book. Our book club found lots to discuss and learned much about Jim Crow era and the circus, but all found the book to be disjointed and were confused or overwhelmed by the timeline.
