Call Us What We Carry is a collection that requires your time. It is honest, intelligent, languid, difficult, and thought provoking. I loved the variety of poetry styles included.

Particular favorites that stood out to me include: "What We Did in the Time Being," " Good Grief," Every Day We Are Learning," and especially "Vale of the Shadow of Death or Extra! Extra! Read All About It!"

Call Us What We Carry is the first full poetry collection published by our National Youth Poet Laureate, Amanda Gorman. The book uses oceanic themes and voyage as ways of discussing history alongside pandemic life. It's dense in parts and requires you to pay attention, but it's also beautiful, intelligent, and honest. It's a unique collection with different styles of works from shape poems and erasure poems to prose. A talented new voice with lots to come I'm sure.
