[close] A fascinating read about rituals surrounding death. The main character, Dawn, is a death doula, which means she helps those that are dying and their families carry out any last wishes. She assists with everything from writing out wills to cleaning out old clutter to purchasing all the ice cream they want. But Dawn's focus on her clients has meant she's occasionally neglected the living, mostly her family.

Dawn's marriage is suffering, her daughter can't connect with her, and then there's Dawn's own near death experience that throws everything in the air. Contemplating what her own life's wishes would be she flees to Egypt to continue the work she started as a grad student and to reconnect with the man she's never truly forgotten.

Character driven and emotional, The Book of Two Ways is grounded in historical research and Egyptology as much as it delves into the spiritual themes of what we can take with us and what we must leave behind.
