A história começa quando Evelyn Hugo escolhe Monique Grant, uma jornalista, para ouvir e escrever a sua conturbada história de vida.
A história encontra-se dividida em 7 partes (intituladas pelos nomes dos seus maridos), sendo que cada uma foca-se na sua vida durante o período em que esteve casada com o marido que dá nome à parte.

Evelyn Hugo é uma mulher cubana, oriunda de uma família pobre, e que sonhava viver entre as estrelas e as intrigas de Hollywood. Sexy, provocadora, ambiciosa, manipuladora, astuta e dotada de uma grande beleza, Evelyn cedo aprende a usar o seu corpo para subir na vida. Hugo poderia ser considerada uma anti-heroína; afinal, ela tem comportamentos moralmente questionáveis e não se enquadra, de todo, na descrição virtuosa de uma heroína. Porém, é exatamente disso que gosto nela. Taylor Jenkins Reid criou uma personagem com várias camadas que temos a oportunidade de desfolhar à medida que a história avança. Evelyn, carismática como é, conquista o leitor por ser perfeitamente imperfeita, enquanto está totalmente consciente dos seus erros e de nada se arrepende.
"The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" é um livro focado na personagem, onde temos a oportunidade de ver como a Evelyn Hugo cresce enquanto pessoa e onde vemos como ela interage com o mundo e as pessoas que a rodeiam. Também é uma história que aborda o lado negro de Hollywood e da fama em geral, os boatos, os jogos de popularidade... Aborda outras questões sociais, como os direitos e a visibilidade da comunidade LGBTQI+, retratando os problemas, da década, inerentes à expressão livre da sexualidade. Por falar em LGBTQI+, o livro tem personagens homossexuais e bissexuais (se a representação está bem feita, isso prefiro deixar para as pessoas que realmente sabem do que falam), abordando também a profundidade e complexidade das relações humanas de uma forma que nos faz refletir com a Evelyn e a Monique.
Todas as personagens com grande relevo têm profundidade (todas têm o seu lado bom e o mau), o que quero aplaudir à TJR. Acredito que, por vezes, focamos tanto na nossa personagem principal, que as restantes ficam para trás (sub-desenvolvidas, ou simplesmente ficam esquecidas na história). Verdade seja dita, é possível ver as personagens a crescer em conjunto com a Evelyn Hugo, sendo que algumas conseguem acabar por se redimir (mais ou menos). Cada personagem revela um pouco mais do lado humano da Evelyn.
Não tenho defeitos a apontar ao livro (por enquanto). É uma leitura cativante, que nos mantém agarrados ao livro, não por querermos saber o que vai acontecer a seguir (não é esse tipo de livro), mas porque a escrita é tão fluída que é possível perdemos-nos nela. E no fim, acabamos por simpatizar e comover com a história da Evelyn Hugo, a celebridade mais escandalosa de Hollywood. ...more

EDIT: Conflicted because I SO wanted to love this book, but only really kind of liked it (not enough to love it). I loved Evelyn and Harry’s undying friendship the most and liked how some of the characters were really layered and complex (I both loved and really disliked Evelyn and Celia as characters), but it still just felt like the story was missing something?? I’m not sure what, but somehow the big reveal at the end and the events after that didn’t shock me, even if I wasn’t entirely expecti ...more

This was my first book by TJR and she came through with flying colors!!!! I am in the awe of this book and how much I came to love and despise Evelyn throughout the book and especially at the end. Although the chapters leading to the ending were heartbreaking, I too, like our character Monique, had a weird relationship with either worshiping Evelyn or looking at her as a human being with flaws. wow wow wow!! i loved this book from the first page to the last. for one i’m a sucker for taylor references & i love the reality behind all of evelyn hugo’s relationships & well seven marriages. so good!

I totally get why this is so popular. It’s just one of those books that I just couldn’t put down. All of the characters are just so complex, compelling, real!! I really admired how feisty Evelyn is, always unapologetically herself. She has very strong opinions, that often deviate from the norm, but that she manages to defend very well. I love how she teaches Monique that if she wants something in life, she has to do whatever it takes to get it. Also, her life story is a total rollercoaster, and ...more

Finishing this book felt a bit like being hit by a train but in a good way. The way where you feel like you need to lie down and think about what you just read for a while. Or just pick the book back up and immediately start over.
