EDIT: Conflicted because I SO wanted to love this book, but only really kind of liked it (not enough to love it). I loved Evelyn and Harry’s undying friendship the most and liked how some of the characters were really layered and complex (I both loved and really disliked Evelyn and Celia as characters), but it still just felt like the story was missing something?? This was my first book by TJR and she came through with flying colors!!!! I am in the awe of this book and how much I came to love and despise Evelyn throughout the book and especially at the end. Although the chapters leading to the ending were heartbreaking, I too, like our character Monique, had a weird relationship with either worshiping Evelyn or looking at her as a human being with flaws. I absolutely loved the story and connected so much with Evelyn's character.

I totally get why this is so popular. It’s just one of those books that I just couldn’t put down. All of the characters are just so complex, compelling, real!! I really admired how feisty Evelyn is, always unapologetically herself. She has very strong opinions, that often deviate from the norm, but that she manages to defend very well. Finishing this book felt a bit like being hit by a train but in a good way. The way where you feel like you need to lie down and think about what you just read for a while. Or just pick the book back up and immediately start over.

a masterpiece with the most real, human characters i’ve ever read. evelyn hugo will stay with me forever
