This book is so intensely emotional. It is a beautifully written story, but it is also immensely heartbreaking. Sepetys has a way of writing history that makes you fall right into the story, despite the hardships, despite the way everything tears your whole being to pieces. I was surprised at the brazen way with which she described the atrocities given that this is intended for YA audiences. But it does present a historical story that needs to be told and understood. Were I the target age of this novel, I suspect it might have been a four or five star read for me. It’s a moving story and, though I was surprised to hear it asserted that people didn’t know this history, it’s definitely a story that isn’t told as often as the story of the Holocaust.

A quick, but good read. I liked the ending; happy, yet not unrealistically happy. Well, a little unrealistic.

Good characters for the most part. I liked Lina, but I liked her brother, Jonas, and some of the minor characters more, characters who painted more realistic and varied images of that time in history. And I liked how lina describes them; some by name, some by characteristic (i.e. The cranky lady). Overall, a good book. I read it in one day. I think my students will enjoy it as well. If I

Another part of history that received little attention was what happened to people in World War II under Stalin. This book tells the story of a group of people that were imprisoned by Stalin and how they survived. It has a lot of tear jerking moments and it can be seen as a sad book but I agree with the author at the end of the day it's a book about love and the determination to live when everything is truly hopeless.
The author implored her readers to share this book so others will know this pa
