What Members Thought

For a short book, this took me a long time to read. As much as I admired the writings and particularly the characterization, I wasn’t really drawn in and kept putting it aside for other things.
But the second half of the book really got me. It wasn’t so much Lennie - to be honest, I kept putting myself in the place of the girl and the woman and the dead tiny creatures and I didn’t really have as much sympathy for him as I was clearly meant to.

Something to be said for a really good book you can manage in a couple hours. So here's the thing about Steinbeck. Like John Irving, Ernest Hemmingway, and J. D. Salinger, he writes the kind of characters and the kind of themes I have a really hard time sympathising with. And here's the thing about how Steinbeck is a better writer than that: I STILL sympathise with them. Seriously.
