What Members Thought
Somehow I managed to miss this book in school, along with the film version. While I knew vaguely that it didn't end well, I'm so glad no one ever spoiled the particulars of the story for me--what a gut punch. I read the book in a day and couldn't put it down. Structurally it's pretty much perfect, and the characterizations are complex and real. Steinbeck wins me over every freaking time.

Something to be said for a really good book you can manage in a couple hours. So here's the thing about Steinbeck. Like John Irving, Ernest Hemmingway, and J. D. Salinger, he writes the kind of characters and the kind of themes I have a really hard time sympathising with. And here's the thing about how Steinbeck is a better writer than that: I STILL sympathise with them. Seriously.
