The story of George and Lennie is their friendship through the years and a shared dream of a little bit of land. Yet, Lennie is not too bright, overly enthusiastic, and uncontrollable, and George always looks out for him. In the end, it is this friendship and dream and the love George has for Lennie that makes the inevitability of Lennie's death at George's hands so sad.
