I hate to say it, but I did not love this book. I did not connect with the characters at all. Yuri seemed to move through life like he had no control and was only reacting to circumstances. Lara was not really developed enough for me to be invested in her life. There is so much coincidence over and over again throughout the book. I have a very high tolerance for coincidence to move a story along but there was a bit too much in this book!

There's no denying the historical significance of this book - it gave a very true glimpse into post-czarist Russia. However, I would be lying if I said it wasn't a tad boring. You gotta be invested in the history in order to read this book. Otherwise, if you're interested in Russian literature, look elsewhere (Tolstoy, Chekhov, Bulgakov, etc.) ...more
