An EXCELLENT, timeless classic. The story of an "underdog" and her quest for love, independence and self-knowledge. Appropriate for all females -- whether in the 21st century or (when Charlotte Bronte wrote it) in the 19th century. Addresses all 4 types of love: affection (family); friendship; romance; and unconditional love (God). Also deals with gender inequality, social position plus much symbolism. This was a re-read after 15 years. I still enjoyed reading this book as much as I did earlier and consider it among my very favorite books. However, I can see that 15 years have changed the way I look at several aspects of the book. The biggest change for me has been in the way I see the character of St. John Rivers. 15 years ago, the younger and more romantic me had little sympathy for this character, but now I am better able to understand his perspective and am far more sympathetic toward him.

I first read Jane Eyre over 50 years ago, and could not believe how much I enjoyed the book. Bronte's descriptive vocabulary made every scene so dimensional. I remember reading some other authors of this period and the story was not related as well. I did not recall the book being so lengthy, but maybe my version was a shortened child's version. I was dismayed that Charlotte used certain words repeatedly, such as ejaculation. Probably the word has a different meaning during this period in Englan
