What Members Thought

What a beautiful collection of letters between a bookaholic and her used bookstore of choice. If you love old books, and especially if you love out-of-print old books, read this. It's lovely, hilarious, and moving all at the same time.

This was so sweet and charming. I’ve heard about it for years and somehow that whole time I thought it was fiction. Finally accepting that it isn’t going to be available as an ebook any time soon, I went ahead and put a library hold on the paperback. I’m so glad I did! What a lovely correspondence! I wish I knew what happened to all the people mentioned.

I have wanted to read this for a long time, and I am glad I did. I found it charming and a lovely peek into different lives.
I was a little taken aback by HH’s later letters but I suppose having developed a level of comfort, she felt comfortable using a shorthand of sorts and letting more sarcasm show. Frank and the other English correspondents on the other hand were unfailingly pleasant.
All in all, I quite enjoyed this.

This book was very fun to read. I love epistolary novels and this was a perfect quick read. The friendship formed between Helene and the family and staff of the bookshop was lovely. I laughed several times and there were several times when I felt like I was right there as they wrote the letters. This being a true account made it all the better.
