This was such a lovely little book! I had the great fortune to read the recently published Slightly Foxed edition. Which has the most divine cherry red cover and creamiest of pages. Like Hanff described in her novel, it is the perfect size to stick in one's pocket and take outside to read.

An absolutely charming book for those who love books! This is a collection of letters over a 20-year span beginning in 1949 and published in 1970 between the author, Helene Hanff, and a used bookseller in London (84, Charing Cross Road), as well as some of his workers. The story begins in 1949 when Helene, a free-lance writer based in NYC, is looking for some hard-to-find books and writes to their shop. What a beautiful collection of letters between a bookaholic and her used bookstore of choice. If you love old books, and especially if you love out-of-print old books, read this. It's lovely, hilarious, and moving all at the same time.

I've always known about this book but always thought it was a work of fiction. I just purchased it from a library sale and realized only after reading it that it's a biography - the letters were actually written between two friends who shared a love for books but never met. I read it over the course of an afternoon, and loved it.
