I re-read this and what can I say - I still think it's probably in my top 5 all-time favorite books. It definitely would make the list of books I would take with me on a desert island. This is a coming of age story, but it's more than that. It's a story of the Old South on the verge of the New South, it's a story of the Great Depression and poverty, and it's a story of the human spirit.
