I knew going in that this was a Cancer Book, but I had heard so much about it and I have enough distance to read these kind of books again. Why distance? Well, in 2004, my beautiful 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of osteosarcoma. Remember Augustus talking about the 80% cure rate? Dang. That's the first Manic Pixie Dream Boy I have encountered in a book.
I cannot figure out why this book is so popular and highly rated. Perhaps it's guilt for disliking a book about kids with cancer? A scene that takes place at one of the most somber places on the planet is so disrespectful and cruel that I cannot understand why John Green, his editors, or his publishers permitted it to go to print. sad unexpected ending ! I really felt sad and sick after finishing it ;( :'(

A must read book but inherently sad I felt, with no hope at the end. That said it reflects life in it's truth rather than sugar pasting it. Kids get cancer. Kids die of cancer. The families have to watch it happen and must feel pretty damn helpless.
