What Members Thought

Immersive and bleak, but not as sad as The Book Thief.

A good read, but a depressing one that doesn't leave a lot of hope at the end of it. Maybe it's better that way; maybe as Green points out, life doesn't always give us closure or a definitive ending.
One of my favorite lines from this was "Time's a real slut; she screws everyone."
The book also questions the Shakespearean quote "The fault lies not in our stars but in ourselves; that we are underlyings." I've always loved that quote and the comfort in feeling nothing in life is beyond our control ...more

Cumulatively awesome, the waxing and waning of hope and distain for it I particularly appreciated. My fav words: 'As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep; slowly, and then all at once. And.. 'My thoughts are stars I can't fathom into constellations.'
After reading this novel my own personal take home message which you may quote me on : if challenged to be without fault, neither I nor my stars would throw stones. But I might throw a few at my doctors, just to remind myself blame was ea ...more

I wouldn't change a word. The pacing and unfolding is good. What makes the novel are the people.
I'm not calling them characters. They are people. They are selfish, funny, frustrating, kind. Most importantly they are real. They are ordinary. They are ordinary people, living their lives ordinarily. They are as special as you and me. They simply ring true. There is no hero worshipping. They are just trying to get by to tomorrow.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone. ...more

I read this book in about a day. I loved it. It liked the message it sent and how it was delivered. I actually really like Green's writing style which is very distinctive. This book also emotionally destroyed me, but I have a history with cancer that I think made this book hit close to home. The characters are well developed and I thought the pacing was perfect. I highly recommend checking is book out.
