What Members Thought

I still don't like John Green's particular brand of snarky kids too much, still find his romances too starstruck and unrealistic (the caveat being that his genre of choice is teen romance, which is those things by default), and still wish for more meat on the bones of this novel, even if it is a novel of cancer and Life and Death.
However, I will say that on the VERY LAST PAGE of the book, I was impressed by the ideas Green raised. The thought that we all will suffer pain but we can choose who h ...more

I do not generally read popular fiction, but this book came to me recommended by a friend whose literary taste I admire and trust. The fact that this book was attracting extreme and passionate reviews was also interesting to me.
To me, this is not a “cancer book” at all – the cancer could have been replaced with, say, ALS, with little difference. This book is about life and love and existential questions: is it really important that we leave our mark in this world? Can we even do good without doi ...more

Every so often, about once every five years, I read a book that's so amazing, I first get aggravated that I didn't write it, and then go out and buy it for everyone I know. I recommend it to people in bookstores, in conversations, on social media... I can't shut up about it. This is one of those books.
I actually bought the book on Audible. I've been a little iffy about whether I like audio books, but the narrator, Kate Rudd, hit this one head-on. I listened to it every spare minute, forsaking e ...more

On teenage angst and drama...
I liked the way I imagined John Green saying every witty line in this book (nerdfighter!). I'd have given this 5 stars if it weren't so bloody sad and kept reminding me of Nicholas Sparks' A Walk to Remember for obvious reasons. ...more

Everyone is terminal.
In Hazel Grace's case, she's been terminal from the moment of her diagnosis of her cancer. Her support group friends deal with various forms of cancer, too. Isaac is her friend, and when she meets Isaac's friend Augustus, their friendship turns to love. This relationship makes for some happy times, some sad times, and some poignant times as they cope with the "faulty stars" they have been handed. ...more
