What Members Thought

This book read much easier for me than other Austen novels. I liked the setup and the plot. The heroine, Catherine is a very well-developed character. The only complaint I have is that the ending seemed rather rushed. The conclusion of the book took maybe a chapter. I think it could have been extended and developed more thoroughly. All in all a good and easy read.

This varied between a 2 star and a 3 star read for me. At times I felt like I was slogging through it. This may be because there was a somewhat abrupt change in style between the Bath scenes and the Northanger scenes. I know that the second half was meant to be Jane Austen's take on the Gothic novels that were so popular at the time but with Catherine being so silly, who was there left for the reader to root for? Henry was quite sweet but clearly had the patience of a saint. It also didn't help

This novel was written at an earlier time in Austen's career but published after her death. What struck me about her language in this book was her openness. As she wrote more and more I think she became more sophisticated in her wording but with this book she is definitely writing with more clarity and less effort to be coy. Because of this I felt her truer personality may have been revealed.
