Northanger Abbey was the first of Jane Austen's novels to be completed for publication, written approximately during 1798–99. And because of that, this novel may be the most juvenile of their publications.

This book read much easier for me than other Austen novels. I liked the setup and the plot. The heroine, Catherine is a very well-developed character. The only complaint I have is that the ending seemed rather rushed. The conclusion of the book took maybe a chapter. I think it could have been extended and developed more thoroughly. All in all a good and easy read.

This varied between a 2 star and a 3 star read for me. At times I felt like I was slogging through it. This may be because there was a somewhat abrupt change in style between the Bath scenes and the Northanger scenes. I know that the second half was meant to be Jane Austen's take on the Gothic novels that were so popular at the time but with Catherine being so silly, who was there left for the reader to root for? Henry was quite sweet but clearly had the patience of a saint. It also didn't help

I haven't been the biggest fan of the Austen I've read so far, but I did enjoy this one more than I was expecting going in! It's a little on the nose, but for the most part it's a fun, smart satire.
Austen isn't afraid to openly mock aspects of society that, at the time, I'm sure she was advised to stay away from.
