My most anticipated book of the year didn't disappoint. The ending to the first trilogy of this Tarot Sequence was everything I was expecting and more. It had me glued to its pages and very anxious not being sure if I wanted to know what was going to come. I'm going to put everything under spoiler tags, so read under your own responsability.

(view spoiler)[The book has an action packed start and it keeps up that way until the very end. Rune and the others go from a bad to a worse situation during all the book, and we discover many secrets in this one.
I've been eager and dreading that moment when Rune would let us know what happened the night of his father's Court fall. I've been wondering from book one what was so horrible that Rune was willing to die before anyone knew. Many have been the theories we've talked among our BR group, one of them was that Rune made something that, inadvertedely, let the agressors enter Sun Estate. And that one was close enough, Rune put Brand in a vulnerable position and the assilants took advantage of that. When what happened was finally revealed, everything made a lot of sense. Rune's fear and grief, the way he tries to deflect the attention whenever anyone gets close enough to that memories, the way he's always looking out for Brand, waiting... he's been fighting for his and Brand lives since that night, without Brand being aware, and finally, he could share the burden with someone. I'm glad he could confide in Addam to keep both of them safe. And Rune needs to stablish his position in the Arcanorum because once what happened is widely known, and I'm sure that secret will be finally pried out of Rune, he would need everything within his power to defend him and Brand. And now, also Addam, because he knows what happened.
I loved Addam here again, he is just so perfect, and I love the relationship he has with Rune and the one he is developing with Brand. I hope they keep as they're now, I think Brand and Addam gives Rune something that the other can't, they complement well and not everything has to be about sex to work out. Sometimes you can love someone as much as a lover but nothing romantically is involved. And that relationship is as perfect and fullfilling as a romantic one.
The book kept surprising me, especially the way I've changed my view of some characters. I even liked Anna at the end. I think she has starting to show signs of growing, and that's good. Also Rune has starting to become better at managing the kids. The sooner he learns sometimes he needs to wait and listen, the better. Many of the messes the kids get themselves into, would have been prevented if Rune had listened for a bit.
And that ending... just now that I was completely convinced about The Tower intentions, we lost him. So unfair!! I hope Rune and Mayan can find a way to go to him and bring him back. I think he isn't dead, at least not yet, and he still needs to teach a lot of things to Rune. I was so sad for our boys, first they lost their father and then, the person who has been looking (despite his mistakes, I'm not forgiving him for what he did to Brand) for them.
So, now, we know Rune's big secret, and we know more about what happened, or what Rune thinks happened, back then. But, there's still a lot of questions unanswered. Who is the mysterious woman who keeps trying to save Rune since book one? Is she the Empress? He calls Rune child but I don't think she is his mom, it could be but... Is she the one behind the fall of Sun Court? Is Brand free of the geas? Did he truly fight it, or did they release him because they had reached their purpose? How could someone put listening devices in the Pac Bell without The Tower or Mayan noticing? Was it Brand doing? Are there infiltrates in the Dagger Throne? (hide spoiler)]
There's still a lot of things to learn, and I'm looking forward to book four. I hope I can learn them with my fellow BReaders because with them the discussion is always so much fun! ...more

The wonder of this series is that it can be, and is, so many different things at once. It is action and slow, still moments of introspection. It is grief and healing. It is fear and horror and loyalty and love. And magic.

Ngl I need to reread this book because when it came out I had covid, and I think I missed a lot through sheer inability to process much. That aside / despite that, it was deeply enjoyable and I loved crying happy and sad tears over my faves. I adore how this series is developing and the care KD puts into the growth of this world and its core cast.

If you are emotionally invested in these characters (and how could you not be if you've read the previous two books), be warned that you will scream and cry. If you're anything like me, you'll also feel the urge to send the author some strongly worded DMs. However, you will also have to admit to the author that you love him for the growth and healing the characters experience. Being able to see KD grow as an author has been a special gift. Being able to hear Josh improve as a narrator has been a gift. Give both these men awards cuz I am so beyond proud

Honestly... I adored this book but it wasn't without pain. I think it was the perfect end to the first "trilogy" arc of The Tarot Sequence. I loved how many moments that, when I reread the first two books, I realized had been strongly hinted to prior.

If you've been curious if you should get into this series, I highly recommend that you do and think that it's the perfect time to do so! The Hourglass Throne comes out on May 17th ...more

I don't think I've ever had my life sucked so completely into a series as this one. The first book was excellent, the second was even better than the first, and now, by some miracle, the third book has topped both previous.

KD keeps increasing the emotion, the family, and the stakes, and I cannot wait to see where it goes next. It's obvious he has a clear endgame to achieve, and I trust him every step of the way. ...more
