Oh, where to even begin with this masterpiece?

I’ve never been so concerned about my heart health as I was while reading the last third of this book, when I tell you my pulse was RACING I am not exaggerating.

A lot of the world building for this series happened in book 1 so THM starts in the middle of the action and only gets faster. I read all 400 pages in less than four hours because I Could. La segunda entrega no decepcionó para nada. Pese a ser Sun nuestro personaje principal, todos a su alrededor tienen increíbles habilidades incluso más poderosas que las de él y eso me encanta.
Vemos cómo crece Sun cómo Lord, pese a todas sus inseguridades, su relación con Brand, a veces siento que no lo valora como debería. Y su relación con Adam es de las más sanas que he leído. Quin y Max son perfectos.

I tore through the two officially published novels and the three novellas in under a week and it was a magical ride. I can’t wait for the third book and the fourth novella to come out! My TLDR review is pick it up with a grain of salt. And if you like audiobooks, this is straight-up one of the best I’ve ever heard.

Longer review, starting with the positives: Oh my god the WORLD-BUILDING. It is phenomenal. I’m on my third read of the series just because of how fu God I’m in love with this series. I tore through the two officially published novels and the three novellas in under a week and it was a magical ride. I can’t wait for the third book and the fourth novella to come out! My TLDR review is pick it up with a grain of salt. And if you like audiobooks, this is straight-up one of the best I’ve ever heard.

Longer review, starting with the positives: Oh my god the WORLD-BUILDING. It is phenomenal. I’m on my third read of the series just because of how fun it is to keep picking up on all the little hints and connections that the author wove in, starting right from the first chapter of the first book. You get even more fun clues in the second book, and I’m having a blast guessing where it might go in the third.

I also loved how this book took the found family theme of the first and grew it even more. As a queer person, I absolutely love seeing the blend of birth and chosen family. I also love how the platonic relationships are given equal/more weight over the romantic relationship - very refreshing.

I was thrilled that this book saw the addition of several badass and wonderfully complex ladies. I love them all and am excited to see how the cast continues to grow. I also am so into the magic battles and magic system - very fun and well thought-out. The author also added some additional context to the main characters journey as a survivor of sexual assault and I thought it was very respectful and well-done, especially as he gets closer to his romantic partner. Final positive - I cannot underscore how witty this book is. There were so many lines that had me actually laughing out load - “This is why I need a diary,” “how would you feel if I fed your ferret drugs,” oh my god I’m laughing just thinking about it.

The negative: I really only had two major negatives for this book, and honestly I’m still going back and forth on whether they’re dealbreakers for me. Anyway, this book included characters casually referring to sex workers as whores, as in “I didn’t see a blond whore anywhere.” This was very upsetting to me. I’ve worked in the sexual assault/domestic violence advocacy sphere, and for me, whore is a slur, and I don’t like hearing/reading it, especially by main characters who are otherwise the “good guys.” I know that there’s a whole argument for literary characters using slurs in the context of their stories/worlds, but this didn’t jive with me. Especially because the main character is a survivor of sexual assault, and there’s such an emphasis on consent as a theme in the book, and Rune is so otherwise up-to-date on pop-culture and so empathetic, it was just really jarring and I couldn’t get down with the argument that that’s just how Atlanteans view sex work. I really love this series and I’m really hoping that the author re-considers having his characters use that word casually.

The other major negative for me is that there’s a couple scenes where it’s kind of implied that Brand might have hired sex workers in the past? It was definitely a little unclear - I thought that was totally the implication at first, but then he said that he just goes to the Green Docks to avoid company? I was confused, but either way I was upset by the idea that Brand might be hiring sex workers, especially in the Green Docks, where it seems like consent is not a thing. I know that consensual sex work can exist, but it’s very rare, and in a brothel in the Green Docks doesn’t seem like that environment. I’m not a fan of main characters who buy sex, especially in an urban fantasy environment that is set in modern times, it just gets too close to human trafficking for me.

In conclusion: the positives are really great, and the negatives are really upsetting. I’ll definitely read the 3rd book, but I’m hoping the author clarifies his language and world-building around sex work, especially in a series that has consent as such a major theme. ...more

Wow, wow, wow, there's probably more eloquent things to say but my brain is stuck on wow. There are very few books that I get from the library that I read and then immediately need to buy for myself just so that I can stare at it on my own shelf (and then reread and reread again until the series is complete).

If the reader can appreciate nothing else in this novel, they will have to acknowledge that the characters and world-building have far out-paced the average fantasy writer's best efforts. I bought The Last Sun and The Hanged Man in June 2021. I have read them four times since then and love them to death.
Everything I wrote about Last Sun is true for Hanged Man as well: a great story with lots of urgency, heartbreak and funny moments. The characters have developed further and several new ones are added that are just as unique and lovable as the 'main' cast. More badass women this time around, yay!
