Mixed feelings about this book, but mostly disappointment. it’s not that i wasn’t engaged while reading the book , but i did find it to be a bit too predictable and cliche. maybe i’m just an incredible genius, but i felt that it was pretty obvious that adorable & amma were the cause of the murders. it was hinted very heavily that it was adora the entire time, which is partly why the book was a little bit unexciting for me . the climax and the resolution were both simultaneously too fast and 3.5
Mixed feelings about this book, but mostly disappointment. it’s not that i wasn’t engaged while reading the book , but i did find it to be a bit too predictable and cliche. maybe i’m just an incredible genius, but i felt that it was pretty obvious that adorable & amma were the cause of the murders. it was hinted very heavily that it was adora the entire time, which is partly why the book was a little bit unexciting for me . the climax and the resolution were both simultaneously too fast and too slow, because the reader knew it was adora like the entire time, it was pretty obvious from the moment adora was like “camille i’m gonna carve my name in ur back” ???? like NOTHING about that was subtle at all😭 and then the mbp thing with marian was pretty easy to guess to. i wouldve actually been suprised at the adora/amma switch if it had been done well, but the introduction to amma being the real killer happened so fast that i read half a page and was almost confused as to how we got to the conclusion that amma did it?? like i get that it was supposed to be the suprise twist at the end, but even the suprise needs more than like a page and a half of buildup. i felt cheated out of the shock bc the ending read like an epilogue. i wanted a more in depth and suspenseful “life with a child killer” segment of camille’s life but oh well. i digress
those were my main issues with the book, but otherwise i really disliked camille’s character. she had absolutely no middle ground, at first being introduced as the timid and bookish reporter, and then on arrival to wind gap becoming this edgy and raunchy alcoholic . ASIDE from all of that she was supposed to be a morally grey character and yet SHE FUCKED AN 18 YEAR OLD????? like there was rly no grey in it for me after that that was so disgusting. pretty much the way she talks about children the entire time is disgusting tho. like idc what kind of childhood repression she went thru that was so icky to read through. bc she was already so irredeemable for me after that i kinda wish she had gone joker mode along with amma rather than get her self redemption/love arc and using her boss and his wife as proxy parents at the end??? that was odd. but yeah her character was just a mix of boring and gross to me, and the good girl turned edgy was a bit much in the end.
other small details i will now nitpick at we’re richard and alan’s character??? lowkey kinda feminist of her to have every male character so painfully boring and flat but u DESPISED richard for being so boring and SO WEIRD throughout the entire book. like first of all his savior complex???? off the charts. he was just so odd. i ALSO wish she would’ve done something with alan’s character bc he was so entirely devoted to adora that i wish there was some backstory behind that other than he’s obsessed with her” like his behavior made me think he was like secretly being mind controlled or something .
ANYWAYSS tired of reviewing but despite my incredible hating this book was a good read and i was never bored. i just think it was difficult to find a line between all out shocking plot twist a la gone girl and “the ending was so entirely random that it doesn’t even count as a plot twist cause it seems like the end of a different book “ a la dark places. nothing can ever too gone girl, but i honestly think i might rank dark places above sharp objects which is maybe a mildly hot take ? ...more
