This touching collection of rural Ontario tales is infused with the rustic land in which it is situated. Essex County is as much a character as Jimmy, or Vince, or Anne. Jeff Lemire is able to capture the entirety of loss and despair in a few short, poignant cells. His ability to clutch the crux of a character in a few poised pen strokes is reason enough to explore his work, and immerse yourself in the lives of his fictionalized home town.
