As much as I wanted to, I just could not relate to this book. I wanted to like it, but finally after trying three times to get into the story, both by print copy and audio, I had to DNF this one a third of the way in.
The essence of the story is a young 17 year old black girl trying to make it in Oakland. Her brother is a bum - only wanting to work on a never happening music career - giving no support to his sister or towards any bills. Her mother in prison, her father out of the picture - dead ...more
