I was enthralled by the book's precision at capturing abuse, neglect, and living in the shadow of a parent's mental illness.

Westover writes brilliantly about the experience of childhood trauma and the urgent need to maintain the illusion of normalcy. Clear and compassionate, Westover describes these experiences and recovering from them with surgical precision, cutting open the abuse and peering under the fog of trauma like the hood of a car in her father's junkyard.

Highly recommended to anyone
