Based on many reviews, I expected this book to lack in character development, wit, fabulous descriptions, joy, innocence and humour when compared to Anne the First;) but I couldn't have been more wrong. It certainly is different, how could it not be when Anne is 18 now, but as full of dreams and aspirations as ever, yet it adds a certain degree of depth to the overall story. And I could not help think of dear Anne as she philosophically exclaimed the night before Diana got married (imagine that! Based on many reviews, I expected this book to lack in character development, wit, fabulous descriptions, joy, innocence and humour when compared to Anne the First;) but I couldn't have been more wrong. It certainly is different, how could it not be when Anne is 18 now, but as full of dreams and aspirations as ever, yet it adds a certain degree of depth to the overall story. And I could not help think of dear Anne as she philosophically exclaimed the night before Diana got married (imagine that!) the horrible idea of people having 'to grow up - and marry - and change!'
Well, it has to happen someday.
I did not expect to cry though, and I did cry while reading some parts of it (quite few, no need to worry), more so over Ruby's final realisation the she hadn't lived as to come joyfully into the Kingdom of God when time would come, but lived like a child of the earth, bound to its pleasures and trifles, and Anne's resolution afterwards about 'the little things of life, sweet and excellent in their place, must not be the things lived for; the highest must be sought and followed; the life of heaven must be begun here on earth' had me thinking if my life was not very much like Ruby's had and that I should strive for something infinitely grander and more wholesome.

Oh, such wonderful times these good friends had at college, especially in the dear place called Patty's Place which hid such simple and yet far more wholesome and gratifying snippets of everyday life, like house plants doing well, cats getting on 'bully', to quote Davy's favourite word, the hearth being alight and blazing, the pantry filled with good, homemade niceties (not sure it is a word though in my own dictionary it would do), letters to be gotten, read with a relish and promptly answered. And Aunt Jamesina (ain't that a bully name?) crowning over all of it, her words 'the teens are such a nice part of life. I'm glad I've never gone out of them myself' had me laughing heartily, as well as many of her other musings. And Phil is a just marvelous, blythe little wooden sprite with her queer ideas, that I always felt like one myself after putting the book down for a change, and mind you, that didn't happen quite often for I devoured the darling book in big mouthfulls (something perhaps Davy would say and do).
It was so weird to think that after closing the book to want, as Phil had put it, 'this lovely Redmond life to go on forever', though I guess, as Anne replied, 'we'll never again have the same delightful, irresponsible existence we've had here' ending quite disconsolately 'It's over forever, Phil!'
I expect I shall conclude on a brighter tone in Anne's quoted words, 'There is so much in the world for us all if we only have the eyes to see it, and the heart to love it, and the hand to gather it to ourselves - so much in men and women, so much in art and literature, so much everywhere in which to delight, anf for which to be thankful.' ...more

Oh! I have no words for how delightful this novel was!
I adore Anne and it was simply beautiful to continue to see her grow up. Our little Anne is not so little anymore, however, nothing has dampened her kind spirit, brilliant imagination and zest for life.
I loved all the kindred spirits Anne met and it was lovely to see familiar and beloved characters.
The romance between Anne and Gilbert at the end was one of the most beautiful and adorable things I have ever read and I was left crying happy t ...more

Another fantastic book by L.M. Montgomery. My experience of this book as an older reader was quite different compared to when I first read it as a child - which is only to be expected as I am not the same as I was all those years ago! When I was younger all that Anne undergoes in the book still lay ahead of me and like her I was full of dreams of where life would take me.
