Wow. I don't think there are enough words. McCammon definitely has become a favorite writer of mine. After reading Boy's Life, I was hooked and now with this work, I am a fan.
Here we have a tale of what happens after the world nukes the hell out of each other; and how do we as humans survive. Amazing story, epic in scale, and such wonderful characters. I cheered our heroines, Swan and Sister; on as they tackled this new world order, with hope. The despair and evil that tried to catch hol ...more

This really was very similar to "The Stand" but it was still definitely worth reading despite being 900+ pages long and I'm glad that I've finally read it. I didn't quite enjoy it as much as The Stand and it's not even my favourite book by this author as I preferred "Boy's Life" but it still had a lot going for it. The writing was excellent! I was pulled into the story from the start, and the character and plot development was well done. Despite the length, the story moved quickly and it kept my interest. My favorite characters were Swan, Josh a ...more

A nuclear apocalypse tale reminiscent of The Stand, featuring a young girl. The beginning and end of this book were great. Good vs. Evil. It definitely bogged down in the middle. A lot of grotesque descriptive passages as well. Overall a good book but for those wanting to try this author I would recommend Boy's Life as a better starting point.
