I listened to this in audiobook format. I thought the narrator did a great job. The book itself started out a bit slow for me, but by the end I was fully invested in the whole cast of characters, the good, the bad and the ugly.
This book again brought home for me, the lot of women in 1400's China. If you were from a wealthy family, your life was even MORE cirumscribed than a peasant's life. Neither life was easy, that is for sure. ...more

I am a fan of Lisa See novels. Her latest is no exception. I was fascinated by her depiction of the life of a female doctor in China from the 1460's into the 1500's. Well written and researched, this is a novel based on the life of real life female doctor, Tan Yunxian - started from when she was a child. Very interesting and informative, at times somewhat upsetting (for example - footbinding and also the way females were treated). Another excellent book by this author
