Daisy Darker was born with a heart defect, that would cause her heart to stop seven times before she was 13. Each time she was resuscitated in time, but was told that even with treatment and surgery she would likely not live to be an adult. Daisy’s mother refused to send her to school like her older sisters Rose and Lily, keeping her home where books were her only companions. Daisy’s musician father was constantly travelling with his orchestra, so whenever her mother needed a break, Daisy would be sent to stay with her somewhat eccentric grandmother, Beatrice.

Beatrice, an author and illustrator of children’s books, wrote a popular bestseller, ‘Daisy Darker’s Little Secret’, for her favourite granddaughter. She also collected clocks in her hallway, one for each birthday, which would all chime at once. Daisy spent many happy days in her childhood at ‘Seaglass’, her grandmother’s ancient, decaying mansion, on a tiny tidal island on the Cornish coast, cut off from the rest of the world when the tide came in. Daisy loved it best when her sisters were home from boarding school for the holidays, especially when a local boy, Conor came to play with them.

On Halloween 2004, Daisy’s dysfunctional family gathered at ‘Seaglass’ to celebrate her grandmother’s 80th birthday, and also to hear her read them her will. They all arrived before the island was cut off by the sea, knowing that they would be trapped there for eight hours until the tide went back out. As the narrator of the novel Daisy recounts the strange and nightmarish events that followed.

The setting is perfect for this Christie-esqe ‘locked room’ mystery. The crumbling old Victorian mansion, cut off from the world by the sea, with a storm raging outside, sets the perfect tone for an atmospheric gothic mystery. As the evening plays out with dinner and the reading of the will, the family member dynamics are revealed as their true natures surface along with their insecurities and grudges against each other. At midnight, just after Beatrice’s eighty clocks have finished chiming, a terrible scream is heard, a body is found and an eerie poem foreshadowing gruesome events has appeared on the board in the kitchen.

As the night goes on memories of of Daisy’s childhood are woven in to show how dysfunctional her family are and it becomes clear that Daisy Darker is not the only one keeping a secret. The atmosphere becomes very sinister and creepy with tension slowly building as the time for tide to go back out approaches. There are many red herrings along the way and several big twists at the ending, which are sure to divide readers opinions. For me the twists were unexpected, but felt too contrived in attempting to explain all the events. Perhaps one less major twist requiring less suspension of belief would have sufficed. Nevertheless, I very much enjoyed the writing, the evocative prose, the horribly flawed characters, the atmospheric setting and the gothic tale.

This is the second Alice Feeney book I have read and I must say she is a master (0r is the proper term mistress) of locked room mysteries. Daisy is the youngest sister of a dysfunctional family. Rose is the oldest, a veterinarian, Lily is unemployed and milking the (British) unemployment system and Daisy does volunteer work. Nancy and Frank, their parents are divorced and tolerate each other. Nana, the matriarch of the family lives on an Island in the Atlantic Ocean in a house named Seaglass. Nana had her fortune told long ago by a Palm Reader in Land's End, so she is expecting to die on her 80th birthday. Trixie is Lily's fifteen-year-old daughter and is a lot nicer than her mother is or is she?
Daisy "was born with a broken heart" is how the novel begins, her family was going to let her die, but the midwife had other plans. Her mother didn't want her, she was hoping for a son after two daughters. She became the least favorite child. She died again on her fifth birthday, trying to swim to America, but her sister Rose performed CPR on her. She was the broken child no one thought that she would live beyond the age of fifteen.
The night before Nana's 80th birthday, they gather at the house for the family reunion, and then one by one the family members are murdered. Nana is expecting it, but what about the rest of them? Nana had made her money by illustrating children's books and then she wrote her own about Daisy. The family all want her money because, besides Rose and Frank, none of them worked, they just sponged off Nana. We wouldn't be complete without the lights going out and finding dead bodies. So, first, Nana's head is bashed in, Frank is poisoned, and Trixie is found with Nana and Frank in the cupboard, left for dead, she had blood between her toes, possibly from an insulin injection. Lily is found poisoned by her perfume Poison and Trixie shoots Rose. But as far as Daisy is concerned, Triex told her that she could not kill her because she was already dead. Conner and her sisters killed her when she was thirteen by throwing her off a cliff because they thought that she had died when Conner hit her with his car. I was wondering if Daisy was dead for this story just by the way that no one seems to notice her. Trixie also had the same heart condition as Daisy, but had the surgery that she never did, to fix her heart.

this isnt the first book i have read by this author. i really liked one of her other books and didnt really like one of her others, so i was wondering where this book would fall being that i had heard so many mixed reviews on it. the premise of the book follows one of those very often-used murder mystery storylines about a group (this time it is a family) gathered in a creepy isolated place a ...more
