Solid 4 stars. Fascinating fantasy world that was great for a debut novel. It reminded me of Lord of the Rings, just without the magical creatures. Can't wait to read the next one!

I have wanted to read this for a few years and I don't know why I waited so long to pick it up. I really enjoyed the book and the world and magic system. I wouldn't say it was the best writing but it was her debut novel so she can only improve from this book forward. It was kind of simple and there wasn't a ton of action that happened although what was happening I really liked.

AWESOME! The people of the Seven Kingdoms are magical (well some of them). They call the magic "Graces". So Katsa has the Grace of killing and she is the King of Randa's assassin. On the side, she is involved with the Council who rescues people in danger from the ever-fighting king's. She meets Prince Po at one such rescue. He has the Grace of fighting. Of course, they spar constantly both verbally and physically.
At one point, they leave Randa and travel on a quest to learn why Po's grandfather ...more

This was pretty good. I didn't know if I'd end up liking it, but I'm glad I read it.
This isn't my usual genre.
I think what makes this book so easy to like is because Katsa is pretty awesome. not only does she kick everyone's butt, but she also is learning who she is. She really grows and comes in to her strengths as well as her weaknesses but she also embraces it all.
The supporting cast: Oll, Giddon, Po, Raffin and others - they really formed and became real people in the midst of this story. A ...more

4.5 stars. In my opinion, first book of all the current YA bestsellers that lived up to all the hype. When I started this book, I wanted to give it 5 stars, but there were a few things that bothered me.
Likes:
* Po, Prince Greening Grandemalion, graced seventh son of King of Lienid, a natural fighter, sounds like a divine fairy tale prince.
* Katsa, King Randa's neice and enforcer, graced warrior
* Prince Raffin is a smart and loyal friend to Katsa, he's good at medicines and healing

Graceling is an engrossing read with wonderfully interesting characters and I enjoyed it on many levels. This book was a real treat to read. It was interesting on so many different levels. There is a powerful heroine who undergoes a transformation, discovering a strength of character to match her physical strength. Watching Katsa mature through the narrative was wonderful. The political intrigue was surprisingly compelling, and the mystery that drives the plot really worked. The magica ...more
