I really enjoyed this one. I suppose it helps that I've always liked "Jane Eyre". I'm glad Thursday could help poor old Rochester out.

1/3/23: Eighteen years since I read this last, where has the time gone? I had forgotten an awful lot, & there's a lot more depth to it than I remember. I love Pickwick's plocking. The strange alternate reality in this can make you a bit wobbly - hang on, what do I know is true & what is the fantasy? Great fun & an excellent read.

In this alternative England, people can jump into literature and characters can leave the story and enter real life. As the author puts it - a cross-fertilization between works of fiction and reality. Some of the character names are hilarious - Jack Schitt, Paige Turner and Mr. Stoker (who works in the vampire division). Very creative and funny.

Thursday Next, SO-27 agent is asked to help SO-5 on a highly confidential case because she's the only one who can identify the suspect, Acheron Hades. Th

It's 1985, the Crimean War is still raging, dodos and thylacines are now common pets, and Thursday Next, daughter of a renegade ChronoGuard who visits her by stopping time to drop by and say hello (rumour has it he is also having an affair with Emma Hamilton), is on the trail of a dastardly fiend by the name of Hades. Hades has stolen the original manuscript of Martin Chuzzlewhit, and has removed and murdered one of the characters. When the manuscript of Jane Eyre goes missing, Thursday realises ...more

this really is a fabulous read. Fforde has a clever and innovative take on classical literature - in the main Jane Eyre but there are references to Shakespeare and Martin Chuzzlewit. He juggles an introduction to the life of Thursday next with a mystery story surrounding Acheron hades, Goliath and Spec ops. yes there are some things that jar in the storyline but overall it is a great read. I have read a lot of Fforde and love to know what he has against Wales

I'm not a big fan of books I have to learn new terminology to read. I think that's why Scifi isn't my fav. genre. Although this book had a little of everything, it was a little too mushy at times, and I thought the dialogue was pretty boring. ...more

This book was imaginative and fun. The world created by this author is unlike anything I had ever seen before. What a great way to spend my time. I believe I will be checking out more of the Thursday Next books.

The story of Thrusday Next a SpecOps agent specializing in literary crimes. I found the book amusing in spots but it took awhile to get going and the book jacket gave away too much of the plot.

Wonderful read for anyone who likes mystery and literature. In order to understand all the wit you need an understanding of the classics.
