I want 100% on board or really into this book at first. It took a bit to get me hooked but once I started to care about the characters then my feelings about the book started to change as well. I ended up really liking to book at the end. I liked the cliffhanger they left us with and I just wish I could go right into book 2. I'm afraid I'll forget about the characters and the plot by the time the next book gets released.

Disclaimer: this is my first Stephanie Garber book.

I really wanted to like this book but just couldn't get over my frustration while reading it. The MC, Evangeline, is just so naive! And I mean like she could literally die because of her naivety. In my opinion, this book would be more suited to a Middle Grade, as the characters feel very young.
There is a lot of telling things instead of showing them (especially when it comes to love) and so many things just conveniently happen to fix e 2.5 stars.

It's not all bad. There is a lack of details in general but I will say, on the other hand, that actually means the book is really fast-paced, I can't remember a single time when I felt like it dragged on. Also, the Fates are amazing, interesting characters that I would love to know more about.
