So apparently I didn't like this at all when I listened to it based on that review. lol Which is weird, because I remembered a bit of it, but I liked it so much most this time. Maybe because I enjoyed the edits, etc with the texts striked though or the repeating words made more sense seeing them. I don't know. But I'm bumping it from 2 to 4 stars.

What I liked: Juliette's backstory, the premise, and the (view spoiler) in this dystopia. What I didn't like: lack of world-building, unfleshed-out characters, and awkward writing.

Based on the description, I knew this was a dystopia from the description but in the text it took me quite some time to figure that out and we didn't really get any detailed information about The Reestablishment, just bits and pieces. I can't really tell you anything about it other than it's evil and must be stopped.

Juliette is very angsty, whiny, and fragile, she is characterized by her love (read: desperation) for Adam, physical beauty, and her status as an outsider. Otherwise, she doesn't seem to have much else going for her, although she is relatively independent and doesn't want to be rescued. As for Adam, I can tell you he's hot, brooding, has a tragic background, and is desperately in love Juliette. The romance angle got a little old - yes, I get that Juliette is in love with Adam, thinks he's really super hot practically every other paragraph, and wants to be touched by him but her own body betrays her and seemingly prevents it - it's sweet, but tiresome.

Which reminds me, Warner is like a flat stock every-villain who's weirdly in love with Juliette and believes together that they will become a force to be reckoned with for reasons I can't quite figure out...I mean, did I (or Warner) miss something crucial about her character? Or, is Warner just filling in every bad guy trope by going there?

By the way, so far from what I've read I do like Kenji, but he's only one of the side characters who isn't even in a big chunk of the book.

And now, on to the writing. The writing felt clunky and awkward. There were far too many unnecessary metaphors and similes that were difficult to follow. And talk about purple prose, which didn't bother me all that much but still, added all together it was too much. I can appreciate a lyrical novel, or a novel that uses a stylized method, when it feels effortless and it flows. Let's just say Mafi comes off as trying far too hard.

I've gotten so many recommendations to read this, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. I wish I could have loved this book. It did have it's moments, and I haven't exactly given up on the series... yet. Like I said, I liked the premise and I believe it has potential so I'm willing to give the sequel the benefit of the doubt and see how it goes. ...more

I liked it. There was a little too much swearing for my personal tastes and I'm not a huge fan of the romance, but I still liked this book. It was a really interesting story and I'm glad it didn't end with a huge cliffhanger. ...more

This has to be the most boring book I have ever tried to read! I know some people loved it, but I just couldn't get into it...and I was listening to the audio version! I think the narrator does a great job of reading it, but she can only do so much with such a boring story. I'm so thankful I borrowed this from the library and if you are going to give this one a try I would suggest you do the same, if possible. However, I don't recommend this one. ...more

I liked the idea of the book, but unfortunately, the story lacked for me. The author went overboard on her use of metaphors, and by the end, it just drove me nuts and I wanted it to end. I thought Juliette was a bit weak and whiny over most of the story, but I did enjoy Adam's character. Will I finish the series? Yea, probably, but not anytime soon ...more
