4.5 stars. I’ve been meaning to get to this series for a long time and I’ve finally arrived. One of my favourite genres is the historical fiction mystery and this promises to be a great series. Set in the period I assign to Edith Wharton, we get perfect access to the upper crust through our main character Sarah, who is the daughter of a prominent family, yet estranged. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because of a few curse words. I'm one who prefers to have none at all in books. Besides the curse words, there is nothing else I didn't like. It was a great first book in the Gaslight Mystery Series.

Victoria Thompson did an excellent job with keeping this mystery on the less graphic side. That's not to say it was boring. The crime was adequately described and balanced with clue hunting more than gore.

Being fairly new to the cozy mystery genre, this is by far my favorite one. It must be the combination of some of my favorite things in books....midwives, victorian era, a strong willed female protagonist who can knock the chip off the male protagonist shoulder. Good plot, although it was easy to figure out who done it. I am highly anticipating the next one. Good first book to an interesting series! I recommend this one.
