This was incredibly researched and a fascinating trip back in history. It was also very different than King's usual stuff, so I loved that he was branching out to this project.

Definitely recommended for lovers of both mysteries, sci-fi, or historical fiction. ...more

What would happen to the world if JFK hadn't been assassinated? This was a question which Jake Epping was asked to face seriously when his friend Al admitted that he had discovered a way to step back in time, back to 1958. Al, dying of lung cancer, tasked Jake with going back and trying to stop Lee Harvey Oswald but it was no simple task. As Jake observed on multiple occasions, the past is obdurate. I know I'm not giving this book a fair shake. I'm giving up after just a few chapters. But as a huge King fan, this book has had almost the polar opposite effect on me after a few chapters as his other books have. His others that I've read have made me think, "What?! Woah. Really? Ok, that's interesting. What next? What does that *mean*?" This one was more like, "Ugh. That was cheesy. Heh? Who cares?" None of the intrigue. None of the mystery. Jake Epping is told by his friend Al Templeton about a hole to the past that exists in Al's restaurant. Specifically the hole always leads to a date in 1958 and every time Al uses it he's only gone from the present for 2 minutes. Al's dying and he wants Jake to use the hole to go back in the past and prevent JFK's assassination on 11/22/63. This book is more a love story combined with time travel with really no horror in it.
