This was my first noir novel and I think it was a great introduction to the genre. I loved how dark it was and how the characters were complex. Also, the mixture of historical fiction and mystery was so cool!

One of the things I like about Silvia Moreno-Garcia is how she explores all genres and sometimes blends genres all while highlighting her birth land of Mexico. In Velvet was the Night, it is noir gene that gets a reworking. There are cynical characters and bleak sleazy setting but with Moreno-Garcia, she takes a new look. Our main protagonists, Maita and Elvis are lonely and make very poor decisions in Mexico during the unrest of the Corpus Christi massacre. They each long for stability but circ
