I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is an adult historical mystery thriller set in Mexico City. If you're at all interested in edgy and modern noir novels, this new standalone novel is a must read. Moreno-Garcia is quickly becoming an author that I can't miss. Her writing style is incredibly lush and detailed. The setting of this novel really jumps off the page. It's practically a character in its own right. I didn't real

Mexican Gothic was a much awaited read that fell totally flat for me. Gods of jade and shadow was much better, drawing from mythology and with magical realism that I loved.
This one again was not so engaging. I liked the premise and how it began but it just did not retain my attention. Elvis was an interesting character and his political associations gave me an insight into Mexican history. Maite though was kind of repetitive as in not much happened with her that was different! Her character arc

Maybe it's the Noir genre, but somehow I wasn't quite as invested in this as I usually am in Moreno-Garcia's books!

2.5 stars I REALLY disliked Maite. She was annoying and didn't like animals! Also, her dreamer mentality was irritating. As was her obsession with Secret Romance. I LOVE some books but I don't compare real life to them, because that's just unreasonable! I much preferred Elvis! I saw the "twist" coming miles away, so overall a disappointment especially as I enjoyed Mexican Gothic!

Wow, this was ooph. I loved Mexican Gothic. It was atmospheric and creepy and beautifully written. The prose was stunning. Here, the writing was stiff, awkward and uncomfortably flat. The characters were unbearable and I literally could not care. I only made it 50 pages and I can't bring myself to continue.

I can see why the ratings are much lower for this book. I'll be maybe a little less quick to jump and buy this author's next book. Because one excellent and one terrible is not a great percent
