Shelves: enjoyed-quite-a-bit, not-bad-for-a-debut, now-i-know-what-the-hype-was-about

Evocative is the word of the day. I could perfectly picture the coastal marshes of North Carolina. I could feel the loneliness and isolation of the main character. Kya was beautifully, sensitively, realistically and heartbreakingly portrayed. I think the author captured the attitudes and cadence of the South. It was touching and surprising. I shed a little tear at the end. Totally worth the effort.

I enjoyed the book. I was taken by the story's setting, and Owen described everything so beautifully. The mystery part was a bit predictable, but I felt a connection with Kya; I liked how the story explored the theme of isolation from both the perspective of the individual and the society. Owen did an excellent job of portraying Kya, her struggles, and her strength, against a society that feared her and hated her because she was different. I had mixed feelings. Some parts I really loved, but some were kind of weird or something like that...

A hard story, a difficult life for a little girl. A person can make other life easier or can make it harder.
The story occasionally reminded me of a book To Kill a Mockingbird...

I loved when nature got very involved in the story itself. Nature, animals, loneliness, success in a rare and hidden field. ...more
