"Way out yonder, where the crawdads sing."
I had wanted to love this one. In a sea of 4 and 5 star reviews, this should have been an easy, quick, perfect read for me.
Instead I found myself bored. Distracted to the point of losing the story line, I had to read and re-read sections again and again. I had even had an overdue fine at the library for keeping the book too long but I just couldn't push myself to read it faster.

This was a wonderful book from beginning to end with its unique setting and character. I started it as an ebook and finished listening to the audiobook and I would recommend the audiobook.
Fantastic book!!! This is one of those times I wish we could if give a book 10 stars because it's just that good. I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction but this book changed me. I loved this book and will recommend it to everyone.
I loved that we met Kya as a 7 year old girl and we followed her through her entire life. We saw her through every milestone and a lot of them broke my heart and the reason why we'll be a spoiler so I'm going to hide it.

3.5 stars rounded down. Kya Clark from the age of ten onward grows up on her own in a North Carolina marsh. She attended school for only one day but eventually she befriends a local boy who helps teach her to read. The book alternates chapters between Kya's childhood and the investigation into the death and possible murder of Chase Andrews. I enjoyed the descriptions of the marsh and appreciated the story of Kya's survival and loneliness. The last third of the book switches into more of a courtr

Fascinating story of Kya Clark, the poor "Marsh Girl" growing up in marsh in NC coast. When local football star, Chase Andrews is murdered, Kya is an immediate suspect.
Story starts slow and bogs down in the marshy details at points, but I enjoyed it. (view spoiler) ...more

I loved so many things about this book. I loved Kya, the protagonist. I found her resourcefulness and personality interesting and the hardships she endures to be compelling. The story kept my attention from beginning to end.
I only have one criticism. When I first began reading the book I thought that it was going to be an intimate look at the life and mind of Kya. It seemed to me that about a third of the way through plot points became as important as the character. My problem with that was tha ...more

It took me a long time to finish this book. I read it in chunks.
The writing was beautiful and the detailed descriptions of the marsh really put you in the scene.
It is impossible not to feel for Kya and her circumstances, but I didn't really feel connected to her. Which is probably the point.
