Wow this blew me away. I can not believe this is a debut novel! The details, world building, and character development were amazing. And the slow build of everything was the exact kind of slow I enjoy, though I think it will give some readers a struggle at times. Every little twist and turn had such an impact because of small details from earlier in the story. This was all just woven together so well. I wonder if I'll like the second book more than this one. I felt lost with the various groups that were different and yet weren't? It was confusing, to say the least. I still don't think I quite got why certain groups hate each other even by the end of the book, except for one group. Perhaps the author was trying to duplicate how different ethnic groups dislike each other for various reasons within the area that the novel took place in but in the imaginary world, this gets really confusing.

Hard work getting through this one. It's confusing, the world-building is inadequate, the characters are unlikable, & it's too much effort for little reward until the very end. The ending was exciting & I started to get interested but then I was left with a massive cliffhanger that is only now hinted at after slogging my way through 500 pages. No questions are ever answered, even if they do get asked. I would like to know what happened in the end but not enough to read the next book. ...more

An amazing beginning to this trilogy. I was hooked the second they brought in the flying carpet. I have this fascination for all books related to Egyptian tales. I love the magic system in this book, the politics I thought would bore me but actually didn't, and I liked that there was some romance (I wish there had been more but I love the little we got)

Gripping and complex story about people caught up in prejudice and culture, everyone trying to do right but grappling with compromises that betray each other. I found Nahri more sympathetic than Ali, but both had good stories.
