"What's the purpose of a map?"

Just suspend disbelief. Go in to this one just for the sheer adventure of it. I know little about map making but I did know that many original map makers left their own little mark on maps, little "mistakes" that made the map absolutely theirs (and so no one could reproduce it). How unique to turn that knowledge in to such a fun fantasy story.

I liked Nell. She's your MC most of the time and I liked getting to know her and her world. I loved the twist of her working ...more

I loved the idea of this book. Shepherd took one small true historical fact from the map making world and created a fantasy/mystery book around it how absolutely brilliant. And of course the cover is stunning. If you can suspend belief (I mean really suspend it and don't over think the details of the plot) I think you will enjoy this book. I had the mystery figured out early, but it was the map making world that kept me reading. I found it very interesting and intriguing. ...more

This started off strong where I was interested in where it was going and couldn’t really predict what was going to happen. But as the book went on, I began to wish for stronger characters or at least characters I could feel connected to and a better plot. The fantasy part of this intriguing but I didn’t feel invested in what was happening by the end.

I had looked forward to this book but it really failed to fire my imagination

The narrative is told through several different voices but simply reiterates lots of events from different angles. I found it really hard to plough through mainly because I could not drum up a real desire to continue reading.
I felt there were many holes in the narrative although the ideas underlying it had some appeal they were never really brought to life.
