I wanted to love this so much. I adored the premise, "what if she didn't wake up?"
But this story truly didn't do well in execution. I'm not saying this to be rude, but more along the lines of like a disappointed mother vibe.
I honestly went four different directions mentally with what I expected this novel to look like and it featured none of my preconceived notions, & while that isn't bad most of the time, this time it led to a book I had to drag myself through to finish.

Something that I will always appreciate about this book is the mental health representation. Aurora isn't depression coded. It isn't hinted. It's blatantly clear that she suffers from depression and low self-worth. It is actually manifested and speaks to her. Her depression tells her how tired and worthless and miserable she is every. single. day. It tells her to give up. It tells her not to bother trying. It tells her that she is just going to fail.

This is Sleeping Beauty story. While Aurora is in her sleeping curse put on her from Maleficent, she is living in her dream world where Maleficent is filling her head with lies, Maleficent wants eternal life and is hoping that Aurora will help her make that happen before Aurora turns 16.
Once I caught on to the author having the reader engage in Auroras dream world then I understood and was caught up in it. It held my interest to the end. I greatly enjoyed this one.

Not your average retelling - had a good mix between the story of Aurora/Sleeping Beauty and bits of Maleficient from the movie, definitely a "twisted" retelling with Aurora being in a dream state and all kinds of happenings taking place within. 3***
