what a fun read! Get ready to be fully immersed into some really classic 80's and 90's movies, sayings, songs and games. And the history of games is just amazing - I love video games and have been playing them for a long time! Hearing the history and some of the things I didn't know was just hilarious!

I really enjoyed learning the world around Wade. How we got to this point and what Oasis is. It's become too expensive to drive anywhere or fly. So there is a complete on-line world called Oasis. ...more

This was a wonderful read. Wade Watt lives in a world where humanity has lost the ability to distinguish between fact and fiction. OASIS is the virtual world that everyone wants to live in. You can make over your life, attend school and even marry in the OASIS. Problems start for our Hero when he finds the first gate to the prize. Wade is on a race to find the "egg" before everyone else, or it may be over for everyone else.

3.5 stars. Imagine the collapse of the world and everyone spending most of their lives and money on a virtual universe called OASIS. There were times when the story dragged, or the author was more busy in dropping tidbits of 80's pop culture than progressing the story. But for the most part, Parzival's pursuit of the Anorak's hidden Halliday egg was a fun trip. This book would most appeal to people who grew up in the 80's, are gamers, love 80's pop culture or sci fi/fantasy lovers. I didn't love ...more

Wade Watts is an 18 year old living in 2044. earth has deteriorated and most people spend all of their time living in OASIS, a virtual game world. The games creator, James Halliday, died and left a hunt inside the OASIS, whoever solves it first gains control of Halliday's company and the OASIS. Wade is one of a group of people called gunters who are trying to solve the hunt while defeating sixers who come from a giant conglomerate trying to take over OASIS.

I enjoyed this but I almost gave up in the middle because it got pretty slow.

Bad:
There are a lot of infodumps (I would expect this at the beginning of a sci-fi novel, but they happened throughout most of the book). And there was way too much 80s pop culture trivia. Frequent references would have been fine (especially because they showcased Wade's obsession with the time period and the hunt), but these were way too detailed and frequent.

I definitely enjoyed and loved this book. what a fun nostalgic read. It hits so many eras - the 70s, the 80s and the 2000s. I grew up in the 80s and am a gamer though not as prolific as some! I loved the game references, the movie references AND the music references. Rush, anyone ? definitely will re read this one.
