I had a really, really hard time getting through this book. In fact, after the first 1/4 of it I was tempted to put it down and stop reading. This series as a whole so far has been filled with ups and downs. Book 1 was just ok to me and book 2 was a lot better. I will say that the last 40 or so pages of Chosen was great and made me glad I kept reading and now I am kicking myself for having left book 4, Untamed, at home. Let me start off by saying this: I don't know why I continue to read these books, I'll have to blame it on momentary insanity or perhaps desperation mixed with boredom. Anyway, I just had to know if the series would improve, and perhaps grow on me - sadly, it hasn't improved, and it is growing on me like flesh eating bacteria - not nice.
The plot is the only thing holding my interest, since the characters are either completely bland or downright annoying. The dialogues for the three books so far feel very odd to me. I don't know, but is just feels unpolished, which is a pity since the story really has room to be something good, but the writing style just doesn't give it justice. The word choices and the occasional colloquialisms thrown in (ho, slut, bitch) make me cringe.
The content is highly inappropriate for young adults. Other than the rather colorful language, which the Author loves to repeat to a nauseating degree - Zoey's juggling 3 guys act continues for this book. Her imprinting bond with her human boyfriend Heath has become stronger, and her vampire boyfriend Erik is oblivious of her two-timing activities. Zoey's romance with and her teacher Loren also grows and culminates in a rather heated scene wherein she loses her virginity, and to make matters worse, the formerly unknowing Erik catches them during the act.
It's annoying how Zoey comes off as a pseudo-virginal creature, and loves to refer to herself as a "ho" or a "slut" every time she commits an indiscretion with one of her 3 boyfriends, yet she can't seem to muster any semblance of self control when she's with them.
The saving grace for this book is Aphrodite. Sure, she came off initially as the villain, but I'm grateful that there has been some developments in her character.
I can't say that I have warmed up to the series, since it has proven to be an exasperating experience to read the books. I have no doubt that curiosity really did kill the cat, in that same manner, my curiosity is compelling me to read book 4. I'm a bloody masochist.
