This book was a refreshing respite from the dull and rather vexing chatter that I had to read from the House of Night Series. Fresh on the heels of the aforementioned book, I started reading Vampire Academy with very low expectations. However, upon finishing it I was intrigued and more importantly, hooked.
Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway a Dhampir (Vampire Guardian), shares a rather unique bond with her best friend Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir (Vampire Royalty). Fresh on the heels of the aforementioned book, I started reading Vampire Academy with very low expectations. However, upon finishing it I was intrigued and more importantly, hooked.

The bond that they they share allows Rose to have a voyeuristic window into Lissa's mind. This bond was forged during an accident that claimed the lives of Lissa's family.
Having left the safety of St Vladimir's Academy for two years due to a threat to Lissa's safety. The tale begins with the two best friends hiding in Portland.
St Vladimir's Academy is a place where Dhampirs train to protect their charges, the Moroi, born vampires from the Strigoi, made - undead and evil vampires.
Soon after being discovered by Dimitri Belikov (a Dhampir guardian) the duo is escorted back into St. Vlad's Academy.
As Rose juggles her extra training sessions with Dmitri, whom she has developed romantic feelings for, she also has to deal with the added stress of keeping her best friend's powers in check.
Unbeknown to the school, Lissa has developed the powers to wield the elements of the spirit; allowing her to heal others and control their minds. Using her bewitching powers of persuasion, she is determined to uphold her family name by winning back her place within the status quo. She also befriends an ostracized member of the vampire elite, the very dark and brooding Christian Ozera.
A series of unfortunate events follow within the course of the tale, some of which; involve a great deal of dead animals and trips to the school infirmary. Rose is determined to protect Lissa at all cost, and in some cases, it means protecting Lissa from inflicting harm upon herself.
Although Rose's character comes off as sarcastic and rebellious, I enjoyed the fact that she's no shrinking violet. I'm on the fence with Lissa's character, she seems to have a dark side, but she strikes me as the typical milquetoast. I adore Dmitri and Christian intrigues me.
All in all the book was an engaging read, and I look forward to reading book 2.
