Ugh. No, thanks. Overly long, bummer of a book full of pandering characters— and not one worth rooting for after the best character is inexplicably killed off! So many trigger warnings. Hard pass.

I thought the insight into how video games were made in that tim period was interesting. I'm glad it's over. I didn't like the characters. I thought Sam and Sadie were pretty terrible to each other over and over under the guise of "but we're friends so it's ok."

BUT IT'S NOT. It's not ok to treat someone like that just because they're your friend and will walk away for a while and then come back later and with no talkin I'm not much into literary fiction. I'm glad I read this. I liked the story. I thought the insight into how video games were made in that tim period was interesting. I'm glad it's over. I didn't like the characters. I thought Sam and Sadie were pretty terrible to each other over and over under the guise of "but we're friends so it's ok."

BUT IT'S NOT. It's not ok to treat someone like that just because they're your friend and will walk away for a while and then come back later and with no talking about things to make amends and then get better and move forward. That's called abuse, my friends.

They were pretty emotionally stunted (valid reasons), socially awkward, (valid reasons), and just all around immature throughout most of the book. Which you would think would change somewhat since the book goes over the course of 30 years. But they don't change that much. I get not everyone changes all those things in their lives, and that's fine, but I hope to god I'm less socially awkward, emotionally stunted and immature than I was 30 years ago WHEN I WAS 8.

I appreciate the beauty of the game that Sam made for Sadie, but was that manipulative? Was that catfishing of a sort? Dunno. Could be a friend thing, could be something else. He always seemed mad that she wasn't just waiting around for him, ready to fall in love with him when he was ready and instead falling in love with someone else.

And the big words. All the big words (someone at book club mentioned these last night and now I can't stop thinking about them). I feel like that was likely just because they went to Ivy League schools, so probably that's just the author's way of showing us how pretentious these kids are. Don't worry. We got it. One kid only does Shakespeare Plays. The other blames everyone else for her constantly going back to her terrible ex who abuses her (she is the victim here and needs to get out and needs help and refuses it and ugh). The third just needs help because he's had a bum life but doesn't want it?

This is why I don't like literary fiction. It is beautifuly written, sure, but IT'S SUCH A BUMMER. ...more
