I think this is terribly overrated. It’s divided into four parts, and the first two I really didn’t like. There was just a bit too much of the author trying to be funny. The second two parts are much stronger but I still found myself being offended on behalf of the child in question because of the choices their parents make and the language they use.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought the issue of raising an LGBTQ child was handled delicately but sensitively (maybe too sensitively because everyone seemed supportive of Poppy's journey despite a few harsh words). Although the trip to Thailand seemed convenient, the Buddhist perspective on life added a very thoughtful element to the book. There isn't just boy-girl, yes-no-up-down . There is a middle way. It doesn't need to be either/or. It can be both.
