On a second reading, this graphic novel simply doesn't hold up as well as it first did. The characterization of Batman seems off, including multiple moments where he seems perfectly happy to indirectly cause the deaths of people or wounds criminals quite egregiously. While the idea of Batman coming out of a long retirement is interesting, it feels like the premise doesn't entirely work. The changes that have occurred in society make little sense. I like Miller's earlier Batman a lot, this one was doubly-disappointing because I didn't like it and because it was a letdown by Miller (I think I had higher expectations because of his earlier stuff).
