To those who are thinking of reading this book , I urge you to do it . It was a lovely book , not necessarily too deep but trust me when I say it wasn't light either . Taylor Jenkins Reid has been popular everywhere. It seems like every other post I see on BookTok and Bookstgram is about her books. I have to admit that The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was the only one of hers that really caught my interest, but I will for sure be reading more of her books in the future, especially since I’m seeing her talk soon and my ticket came with a signed copy of her newest book. I think this book was a great place for me to start with Taylor’s books. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo captured her skill as a writer really well. She was able to describe the allure of old hollywood while also weaving in disucssions of race, sexuality, LGBTQ+ identities, and grief in a way that kept me interested from the first page.

The weird thing about this book was that I hated nearly every character yet I was oddly invested in the story. Normally having a whole cast of characters that I hate is a sign that I’ll dislike the book, but I devoured this book because I needed to know what was going to happen next. It was like reading a celebrity gossip article - you hate the celebrities, but you’ve got to know what’s happening to them. I was also weirdly emotional during the sad scenes. I didn’t cry, but Taylor Jenkins Reid really packed a punch during the emotional scenes. She has a way of writing a scene that breaks your heart even if you hate the characters who are being wronged in the scene.

Harry was the only character I liked and he truly deserved better. Life threw so much at him, but he didn’t let that turn him into a bad person. He stuck around for his family and cared for everyone wholeheartedly. If this book had been focused solely on him, I would’ve loved it even more.

The only downside that I found to this book was that it is so hyped that I felt a tiny bit disappointed when I was reading it. It’s still a great book and I understand why everyone loves it, but it felt like it was missing something to make this become an all-time favorite for me.

Those are really my major non-spoiler thoughts about this book. I would recommend this book to other people, but go into this with moderate expectations and don’t let the hype impact your reading experience if that’s at all possible. Also, check the trigger warnings if you don’t mind seeing small spoilers because there’s a lot of intense and triggering content in this book so it’s definitely not a book for everyone.

This book was one of the most leisurely reads I had this year. The story flows seamlessly, and even if it’s not the plot itself that keeps the reader glued to the page, the prose does. The book doesn't get the last 1/2 star because I thought TJR 𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘭 toward the end. She tied in all the loose ends too easily. Nevertheless, I will be reading more by this author. ...more

Ugh. I cried, so immediately it’s a 5/5 for me. So glad I FINALLY got on this Taylor Jenkins Reid train. Her writing is so lovely and paired with her intricate and complex characters, I just want to read everything she has ever written.

Official: I will no longer read books published by this author because they are completely hyped up in my opinion. My expectations for this book were so high for all of the gas it received only to realize I could have used this as toilet paper during the initial stages of Covid. The only good sentences came at the end when it challenged my philosophical view on love and marriage but outside of that ..... this was an absolute waste of my time.

I don’t think I have ever been so enraptured in a book before. It may have taken me a while to read but that does not make it any less of a masterpiece because this book is a piece of art. Evelyn is such a remarkable character with such a complex story, she is someone who is manipulative and admirable.
